Remembering the Online Dance Party

Sunday, March 15th 2020 is when the pandemic officially started, at least for most people in the U.S. That was the day most of us found out we wouldn’t be coming into work the next day, or, in many cases, ever again, at least for that employer. Though the pandemic had been officially declared a few days earlier, on Wednesday, It wasn’t until Sunday that the repercussions of that announcement became clear, and that the world would never be the same again.

I wanted to help, but I wasn’t sure how. A few days later, on Wednesday, I decided the best I could offer was distraction, so I announced online that I’d be playing some music on Twitch, then a platform used almost exclusively by gamers, but one I’d occasionally used in the past to livestream my performances as a DJ. As you now know, the idea caught on, and before you knew it, being a Twitch DJ became “a thing.”

What was to be a one-time dance party became a weekly gathering on Friday nights. At its height, my Online Dance Party had over 600 participants in the virtual room. For a while– 19 weeks, to be precise– I followed each Friday show with a short Saturday write-up of what we’d done the night before, along with the songs I’d played. It wasn’t easy to compile that data, as I was playing mostly vinyl records. When I share playlists from past events, I’ve typically used Serato, so creating a chronological list of the songs I played is relatively easy. When it’s vinyl, it means a lot of note-taking and rewatching of the previous night’s stream. Nonetheless, it was the pandemic, and like Buckaroo Banzai said, “Time? I got nothing but time.”

The Online Dance Party lasted for a long time. June 18, 2021 was the final dance party, and my 2 Years on Twitch Anniversary Party on June 27, 2021 was the final incarnation of the event. Now, almost three years after the fact, it’s nothing but a fond memory.

As I’ve been migrating posts from the old site to this new one, I was reading through some of the old Dance Party recaps, and started wishing I’d done write-ups on them all. It’s too late to do that now, but the best I can do in lieu of playlists is to share some of the images that were used to promote the past events. While I no longer remember what I played at any of these, I do remember each and every one, and all the good times I had with my audience, both regulars and anonymous strangers. Cheers to all of you! I hope I made your Fridays a little easier in those uncertain times.

20th Online Dance Party
This is from July 31, 2020, to advertise the 20th Online Dance Party
Newspaper Prohibition Ends
To celebrate the 21st dance party, we turned 21 and could drink. A newspaper marking the end of Prohibition became the party image for that week.
The Last Online Dance
September 4, 2020 was advertised as the Last Online Dance Party, because I was moving to a new state, and would be unable to host a show for about 4 weeks. The next dance party didn’t take place until October 4, 2020.
Monsters Crash the Pajama Party
Monsters Crash the Pajama Party was the title of the Online Dance Party on October 30, 2020, which was, as suggested by the title, a pajama party.
Rocky's Sweet 16
Rocky became the Online Dance Party mascot, and as he turned 16 on November 5th, the party on November 6, 2020 was his Sweet 16 Birthday Celebration. Bonarma, Rocky!
Christmas Kick-Off 2020
On December 4, 2020 I hosted the official Christmas Kick-Off Dance Party to usher in the Yuletide season.
Ghosts of Christmas Past
December 18, 2020 was another Christmas-themed livestream, dedicated to the ghosts of Christmas past.
Boxing Day 2020
Christmas fell on a Friday in 2020, so the dance party was postponed a day and held on Boxing Day, December 26th.
The Snows of Yesteryear
New Year’s Day fell on a Friday in 2021, so to kick of 2021 we celebrated with a New Year’s Eve party, one night after the fact, which we called The Snows of Yesteryear.
The Friend Zone Dance Party
The February 12, 2021 Online Dance Party was themed as the Friend Zone Dance Party, as suggested by one of the party regulars.
2nd Anniversary on Twitch Flyer
June 28, 2021 marked 2 years to the day since my first Twitch livestream, so we celebrated with a get-together that was mostly talking, and not much dancing. Here’s the 2nd Anniversary on Twitch Flyer that was used to promote the event.
Birtpop Livestream
And finally, here’s the advertising image from an all-Britpop Livestream I did, the date of which I cannot remember.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this walk down dance party memory lane as much as I have. I almost feel inspired to fire up the webcams, dust off the Stream Deck, drop a disc onto the platter and stream on Twitch once more, for old time’s sake.

  1. When the world turned inside out, these dance parties did the unimaginable in the face of the pandemic. People came together and gave myself and others something that was desperately needed, community.

    My gratitude is beyond measure.

Thank you Greg . Keep spinning and we will keep dancing.

I really appreciated Greg’s Zoom Dance Parties. They really got me through the pandemic. Great music and socializing! It was nice for him to do this on his own time late into the evening!

  3. Truly, one of the very very few things that kept me going during those hardest days. I have no idea how we came across Greg’s stream, but I’m so glad we did. Those Zoom dance parties were magical and soul-uplifting ❤️

Xanadu will forever have a very special and very specific place in my heart. And Rocky, the beloved demon dog ❤️

  4. It was a strange and difficult time, but I always looked forward to Friday nights. It was a space to set aside the worries of the world and dance the weariness of another week away. Thanks for everything Greg. It made a big difference. I miss it and y’all!
