Last night’s event was about as lavish as they come. I DJ’ed two sets at a Christmas party at a large home in Austin, Texas. Apparently it’s an annual event, and one that people eagerly anticipate, and I hope I’m going to be back next year. The estate itself is beautiful, with multiple buildings, patios, cabanas, and yards. Hundreds of guests showed up for food, drinks, music, and more. The food was some of the best I’ve had at an event in some time, prepared on-site by Eat + Drink, one of Austin’s best catering companies, at least in my opinion. Judge for yourself in this short clip, and let me add that those cheeseburgers were tasty beyond belief!
Okay, gushing about the party aside, let’s get down to the music. My first set was on a stage set up in the backyard, near the pool. I played for 90 minutes before an electric violinist took the stage to shred over some metal tracks. He was followed up by a great band that covered hits from the ‘70s and ‘80s.
Once the band finished, I played a second set, this time in a sort of guest house / rec. room, replete with multiple televisions showing football games, a golf simulator that allows users to practice their drives indoors using real clubs and balls, shuffleboard, video games, two bars, and this wonderful postprandial snack buffet pictured above. Who can say not to bacon and donuts??
The group at the after-party was enthusiastic, and especially enthralled by my scratching and beat manipulation, so I made sure to put on a show for them. Their enjoyment made my night that much more fun, and the 2 hour set time seemed to fly by. The only hard part was keeping the mixes on tempo and the cuts on time in between all the fist bumps and high fives I was getting!
