Online Dance Party 9: The Winter Soldier 5-15-20

For nine weeks now I’ve been streaming DJ sets on Twitch, and people around the country, and even around the world, are tuning in for a few hours of distraction from what’s going on around us all right now. Most of my audience has been from the Western US and British Columbia, though I’ve had people from as far away as Argentina chime in in the chat room.

In truth, I don’t know where most of my audience is, because of the 200-300 people who tune in each week, only about 30-40 sign in and identify themselves. The rest are anonymous numbers. Last night was no different: my Twitch “Stream Summary” tells me I had 456 “Live Views” and 226 “Unique Viewers,” but only 41 “Unique Chatters.” Who were all the rest, one wonders?

The theme was the MCU this time around, based around The Winter Soldier being the 9th MCU film, and this being the 9th Online Dance Party. Yeah, I know I’m barely treading water with the movie tie-ins at this point, but it’s getting to be slim pickings. Throughout the night, the various MCU heroes gradually showed up to the night club. At one point Thanos crashed the party! You can see the party in full swing above. And below, you can see the promo image I used during the week: DJ Iron Man!

Last night, for the first time, I started taking phone calls, and  putting requesters “on the air,” old-time radio style, if they were brave enough to phone in. It didn’t work all that well, but it was fun. Between echoing and microphone issues it was something of a mess, and we switched back to text requests, but for awhile it was neat to get calls from Chicago, Austin, North Carolina, Philadelphia and all parts of the nation. Who knew so many were listening from so many faraway spots?
