Love has made me do foolish things. Many, many foolish things. More foolish things than I could possibly count. In fact, it would probably be easier for me to come up with a list of the 366 Most Foolish Things I’ve Done for Love than a list of my 366 favorite songs. Of course, sharing that list would be another thing entirely, as most of the things that are coming to mind right now are far too foolish, and embarrassing, to ever be shared, but the list would be a long one nevertheless.
Of the many stories that come to mind, one that isn’t too embarrassing to share will serve to nicely sum up my typical method of seduction, my modus operandi if you will, in my younger years. In my sophomore year of high school I had a crush on a girl at school. I’m pretty sure we never even spoke, but I’d see her around, and I liked her. One day, I wrote “I love you” on a piece of paper and mailed it to her, with no return address. And that was it. I never confessed to her that I had done it, never told anyone else. I just sent it and hoped for the best, like a true fool in love. Needless to say, I’m sure if she even received the letter (I wasn’t 100% sure I had the correct address), she had no idea who sent it. I’d like to think that if she did receive it, to this day she wonders who her secret admirer was, though I highly doubt she even remembers receiving it. Rather than track her down and tell her the disappointing truth, I’ll let her maintain the fantasy she must have had that it came from whatever boy on whom she had her own foolish crush.
I have a hunch that crushes and foolish behavior will come up time and again during this countdown, as music and love are hopelessly intertwined in my life, and I know in advance that many, many songs on the list are only on the list because they serve to remind me about some past love affair or crush.
What about you? Done any foolish things in the name of love? Of course you have. It would be weird if you haven’t. Tell the world in the comments… if you dare!
