Favorite Song No. 356: The Who – Won’t Get Fooled Again

There’s no real point to writing anything today. The Who are a massively famous, super-popular band about whom volumes have no doubt already been written, while I barely know anything about them. I think one of them is named Pete? Maybe? I’m pretty sure they’re British. I also know that many people’s list of favorite songs would have something by them at the very top, and if any of those people are reading this, they are probably fuming to see them barely make the grade in 356th place.

Instead, I’ll write a bit about a quandary that I had many times while compiling this list, as today is the first time that such a situation arose. As I explained when I laid out the rules for creating the list, I am limiting the list to one entry per artist. Someone who was in a band and later went solo, or joined another band, may show up more than once, but I can’t have two songs by, say, The Who, in the list. Since I began the process of creating this list by including every song I could think of that I liked, there are many bands and artists who are in the list more than once, but the also-rans are all tucked away safely at the bottom, from 649 down to 997. The top 648 spots are reserved for 648 unique bands and performers.

The Who is the first artist I’ve covered thus far that forced me to make a choice, as I have two songs by The Who in my Top 900-something favorites. As it turns out, my 2nd favorite song by The Who, and thus potentially my 357th most favorite song of all, is “My Generation.” Since I like “Won’t Get Fooled Again” better, it gets the coveted spot in my list, and “My Generation” has been relegated to the basement. Nonetheless, I think it important to acknowledge both, so now you know my Top 2 Favorite Songs by The Who. From here on out, anytime I write about an artist or band with other songs in my list, I’ll include a list of the songs that were in consideration. You’ll see that list, like the one below, on any post where I had to choose between multiple tracks by the same artist. And that’s all I have for you today.
