If you want to see a grown man cry, watch Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 remake of his own film from 1934, The Man Who Knew Too Much. At the end, when Doris Day sits at the piano and plays Que Sera Sera, and Hank hears it upstairs and starts whistling. Waaaaaaaaa. That was the sound of me crying. More than any other instance I can think of, this song is absolutely integral to the film in which it is featured. Often, when casting someone like Doris Day, a filmmaker will have her sing simply because she’s a singer, but not this time. The song, and, as it happens, another song in the same film, is absolutely necessary for the action to proceed. That is masterful filmmaking.
Besides its ability to evoke tears from me, the song is great. I’m a big fan of Frank DeVol and His Orchestra, who provide the instrumentation that Day sings over. And for that reason, and because it makes me bawl, it makes the cut at number 354 on the list.
