Greg Gioia | Party & Wedding DJ

I’ve been involved with music in many capacities throughout my life. Even my first paying job, at the age of 14, came when I was paid $50 to perform as a DJ. It was a natural fit for me, and I continued to DJ whenever I could. Initially I played house parties and school dances, quickly graduated to night clubs, and eventually expanded into weddings and corporate affairs. Additionally, I’ve been in a few bands throughout my life. In high school I sang and played guitar in a punk band. At the same time I was a DJ in a rap band, and a rapper in a yet another band. Much of the pop music that I enjoy is typically classified as indie music. My first foray into the realm of music-other-than-what-I’d-heard-on-pop-radio came when I discovered David Bowie. Not long afterwards I learned of Joy Division, by then reincarnated as New Order, which led me to The Smiths. I realize that in today’s musical climate the idea of a kid who is DJ’ing in a rap crew considering The Smiths his favorite band makes little sense, but at the time it wasn’t that paradoxical. Rap at that point was as indie as it got, and it wasn’t unusual to hear Depeche Mode at a rap party, or Doug E. Fresh at a gathering of mods. I’m a big fan of concerts and shows, and I see bands play live fairly often. My favorite live musical experience, however, is the opera. I’m far from an expert in the genre, and am only able to attend an opera perhaps once or twice each year, but it is an experience I never tire of having. The same goes for jazz. I love it, but don’t know its intricate nuances. I do know that I especially enjoy Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and all of the great big bands from the ’30s and ’40s, as well as Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and Erroll Garner. I don’t do so well when it comes to listing favorites, but if pressed, I’d say the following are my all-time favorite bands and singers of life:

Joy Division, The Smiths, Belle & Sebastian, Pulp, Suede, Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Camera Obscura, Biggie Smalls, Run-D.M.C., Franz Ferdinand, Ratatat, Bauhaus, The Pixies, Beastie Boys, David Bowie, Richard Hawley, Can, Kraftwerk, The Knife, Hot Chip, MGMT, The Aislers Set, Radiohead, and The White Stripes. I probably omitted a bunch of stuff I really like, but that is always my problem when composing lists of favorites.
